Step 2.1 Get the toddler’s attention

Once you get the toddler's attention, present the target stimulus, and the cue or task direction.

EXAMPLE
 
Charlie is learning how to complete a clean-up routine.
 
Charlie’s mom would first move close to Charlie and secure his attention, such as standing in front of him at eye level or touching his arm.
 
Then she would focus his attention to the target stimulus, “all finished with eating.”
 
Her cue or task direction would be handing Charlie the plate and saying “time to clean-up.”
